Dr. DeKosky joined the Section of Hospital Medicine in 2016 as an academic hospitalist and Director of Inpatient Quality Initiatives and Education. Prior to a career in medicine, she worked in health policy for many years in Washington, D.C. in the U.S. Senate and the private sector. She came to UPMC following four years on faculty at University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia, where she completed training in rapid cycle process improvement and QI at the Penn Center for Health Care Innovation. In addition to her clinical duties, she also serves on the Inpatient Medicine Committee and the Patient Experiences Committee at UPMC Presbyterian.
Dr. DeKosky’s academic efforts span quality improvement, medical education, health policy/advocacy, and the cultivation of leadership skills in medical students, residents, and faculty. She is co-director of the Integrated Life Sciences elective in the medical school called Changing Science, Changing Society, which focuses on skills surrounding physician advocacy and social determinants of heath in a rapidly changing scientific and policy landscape. She directs the Hospital Medicine Track for the UPMC General Medicine Academic Clinician-Educator Scholars Fellowship, and has mentored many projects with residents and faculty. She has spearheaded efforts around value metrics and QI initiatives on the inpatient medicine service, including the novel IM-SPARC Fund, which in 2019 allowed the residents to earn a group incentive for meeting hospital quality metrics.
Dr. Dekosky also serves on the IM Residency Program’s Leadership and Discovery (LEAD) Executive Committee, reviewing residents’ longitudinal projects in the QI domain. She is a member of the UPMC Quality Review Committee, which reviews IRB-exempt QI projects and offers counsel and coordination across the health system. She also serves on the Leadership, Education and Patient Safety Committee (LEAPS), which has GME-wide membership of residents and fellows, focused on improving systems issues.
