Andreas Kyvernitakis, MD, FACC, FASE

My academic interests span the integration of research, teaching, and clinical care, with a focus on advancing cardiovascular health across diverse and high-risk populations. My primary areas of specialization include cardiovascular imaging, clinical cardiology, and cardio-oncology—fields that intersect to address the increasingly complex needs of patients with both Cardiovascular disease and cancer. 

Clinically, my work has been shaped by formative training at a high-volume oncologic center, where I gained extensive experience in managing Cardiovascular complications of cancer therapies. This foundation informed my commitment to building multidisciplinary models of care. Prior to my current role, I established one of the first dedicated cardio-oncology clinics in Iowa, creating a collaborative framework that brought together cardiology and oncology to optimize patient outcomes. I continue this work within the Heart and Vascular Institute at UPMC, where I contribute to the care of patients with complex Cardiovascular conditions, with particular emphasis on imaging-guided diagnosis and management. 

My research interests align closely with my clinical expertise, focusing on improving early detection and risk stratification of cardiovascular disease. I am especially interested in leveraging advanced cardiovascular imaging techniques to identify subclinical disease, guide therapeutic decision-making, and inform preventive strategies. In parallel, I have a strong interest in preventive cardiology and cardiometabolic health, recognizing the critical role of early intervention in reducing long-term cardiovascular risk. 

As an educator, I am committed to mentoring trainees across disciplines and fostering an appreciation for the evolving field of cardiology. I aim to equip learners with both the clinical acumen and the investigative mindset needed to advance the field. Through teaching, I emphasize evidence-based practice, multidisciplinary collaboration, and the importance of personalized patient care. Overall, my academic mission is to contribute to the advancement of cardiovascular medicine through integrated clinical care, innovative research, and dedicated teaching, with the ultimate goal of improving outcomes for patients.
