Dr. Aiyer's academic interests focus on preventive cardiology with a special interest on novel cardiac risk factors and the use of coronary calcium scoring in the assessment of subclinical atherosclerosis. He is a co-investigator on the Heart SCORE study, an ongoing observational study involving an ambulatory biracial cohort of adults in Pittsburgh.
Dr. Aiyer's clinical interests focus on cardiovascular prevention. He directs the Lipid Clinic at the UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute where he sees patients with inherited and acquired dyslipidemias. He supervises the assessing subclinical atherosclerosis through coronary calcium scoring by electron beam CT scanning. He is also actively engaged with the sports medicine community and has a clinical interest in providing cardiac consultation to athletes. He serves as a cardiovascular consultant to many college-level sports medicine team physicians in the greater Pittsburgh area. He also serves as a cardiovascular consultant to the Pittsburgh Penguins of the National Hockey League.
Dr. Aiyer is faculty member within the Division of Cardiology. He holds the rank of Assistant Professor of Medicine within the Department of Medicine in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He actively serves as a teaching attending on both the inpatient and outpatient services within the Division of Cardiology. He serves as director of the preventive cardiology rotation within the cardiovascular fellowship. He also serves as director of the inpatient cardiology consult service based at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Aiyer delivers several lectures each year to medical students in the 2nd year cardiology course and 4th year clinical pharmacology course at the University of Pittsburgh. He teaches and works with fellows, residents, and medical students.
