Dr. Heist joined the Pitt faculty in 2010 as a clinician and resident physician preceptor at Shea Medical Center, located in UPMC Shadyside Hospital. He is heavily involved in teaching medical students and supervising residents in the outpatient and inpatient settings and is the Clerkship Director for Internal Medicine at UPMC Shadyside. He annually supervises resident physician care of patients hospitalized on the general internal medicine inpatient service at UPMC Shadyside approximately 10 weeks a year.
Dr. Heist lived in Japan for three years before entering medical school, and between residency and fellowship training, served as co-director of a general residency program in Sapporo that is affiliated with UPMC Shadyside. He remains an adjunct teaching faculty member for the program in Sapporo and coordinates observerships for Japanese medical trainees at UPMC. Additionally, since 2015, he has served as clinical curriculum coordinator for students from a Chinese medical school affiliated with UPMC.
Dr. Heist's research interests include international medical education and clinical reasoning.
