Bryant Shuey, MD, MPH, is a board-certified internist and Clinician Investigator in the Center for Research on Health Care. His work focuses on substance use and chronic disease, with an emphasis on evaluating policies affecting treatment access for opioid use disorder. He completed a 2-year general medicine fellowship at Harvard Medical School, where he worked as a research fellow and prinicap investigator in the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Institute on various projects, including the impact of high-deductible health plans on care for opioid use disorder, the association of a Massachusetts opioid prescribing limit law on opioid prescribing for post-operative orthopedic patients, and pandemic-related changes in high acuity alcohol-related conditions. He is interested in quasi-experimental methodologies in his work, including interrupted time series and difference-in-differences.
As a chief resident at the University of South Florida, he helped to develop a substance use disorders treatment arm within the resident clinic and worked locally to reduce barriers to timely access to medications for opioid use disorder. He currently teaches students and residents on the inpatient service at UPMC Montefiore. He is interested in learning from patients about their lives to create person-centered treatment plans. He is interested in integrating substance use and preventive screening into clinical practice.
