As the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Hospital Epidemiology at VAPHS, Dr. Martin is most interested in quality improvement research in infection prevention and finding ways to decrease the spread of hospital acquired pathogens and resistant organisms. She is very interested in how we use personal protective equipment and isolation to decrease the spread of infections, while trying to maintain high quality patient care. Most of her research focuses on contact precautions and hospital adverse events. She is also interested in infection prevention in dialysis, CLABSI, and medical education.
As the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Hospital Epidemiology at VAPHS, Dr. Martin works with the VA Infection Prevention team to decrease the spread of hospital acquired infections, including, CLABSI, CAUTI, C. diff, MRSA, VRE, surgical site infections, and other device associate infections. She is also a member of the Infectious Diseases Department and attends on the Infectious Diseases consultation service at the VA.
Dr. Martin is an Assistant Professor of Medicine and her educational interests include infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, and clinical infectious diseases. She is very interested in teaching physicians and staff about ways to decrease the spread of hospital acquired infections and how to do quality improvement. She teaches infection prevention basics for both medical students and residents, and worked with Dr. Graham Snyder to develop a comprehensive infection prevention training program for both ID fellows that are interested in a career in hospital epidemiology as well as ID fellows with other career goals that are interested in applying infection prevention to their area of focus.
