Dr. Viehman focuses his clinical research in several areas, including drug resistance, antibiotic stewardship, and quality improvement. Currently, he is working on projects evaluating patient risk factors for drug-resistant pathogens, including vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium and adjunctive therapy for patients with C. difficile infection. ln addition, he is evaluating barriers to vaccination against Streptococcus pneumoniae in patients who meet appropriate indications.
Dr. Viehman has clinical interests in bacterial infections, including endovascular infections, musculoskeletal infections, and urinary tract infections. In addition to inpatient clinical services and office consultation, he is active member of the UPMC Antibiotic Management Program. In both of these areas of clinical work, he remains committed to the work of decreased unnecessary antimicrobial agents.
Dr. Viehman works with medical students, residents and fellows on clinical service and also gives didactic lectures and facilitates small groups of learners. His focus includes antimicrobial agents and spectra, microbiological interpretation and clinical examination. In addition, he integrates relevant evidence-based medicine topics into his teaching.
