  • Falk Professor in Ambulatory Care
  • Director, Center for Research on Health Care
Academic Interests

Dr. Liebschutz’s research focuses on prevention and treatment of OUD in medical settings, with a focus on opioid prescribing for pain and treatment of OUD. She uses implementation science and health services research methods, including analysis of databases, survey research, intervention development, qualitative studies, and large randomized trials.

She has served as PI and co-investigator on multiple NIDA funded RO1 and U studies, including cohort studies and randomized controlled trials in inpatient, primary care, and HIV care settings. She is PI of the Appalachian Node of NIDA Clinical Trials Network. In this capacity, she co-leads the Subthreshold Opioid Use Disorder Prevention (STOP) Trial, a cluster randomized trial (CRT) examining whether a nurse-care manager, brief PCP advice, and telephone health coaching can reduce risky opioid use. She also co-leads the Co-CARE Trial, a CRT testing whether a formal collaborative care intervention with nurse-care manager, health coaching, population management, contingency management, and addiction specialist consultation can reduce polysubstance use in primary care settings. She is also multi-PI of a cooperative NIDDK HEAL initiative trial, Pain Reduction and Opioid Medication Safety in ESRD (PROMISE) Study, examining pain treatment, including buprenorphine treatment, for patients on dialysis.

She founded and chairs Bridging Connections in Addiction Research (BCAR) at the University of Pittsburgh, a network of multi-disciplinary addiction researchers for collaborative research and training. She collaborates on studies examining real-world data on impact of medications for OUD, harm reduction methods, and emerging complications of the opioid and addiction epidemic. She also studies physician burnout and wellness.

Dr. Liebschutz manages a panel of primary care patients, including long-term management of substance use disorder. She also serves as consultant on the inpatient Substance Treatment and Recovery Service (STARS). In her capacity as Division Chief, she established STARS and greatly expanded the Internal Medicine Recovery Engagement Program (IM-REP), a combined primary care and addiction medicine practice. She has supported low-barrier addiction care and harm reduction practices and is working on expanding these capacities into the future.

Dr. Liebschutz’s current educational focus is on expanding clinical and research skills related to substance use and heath services research. She has students and residents rotate with her on the inpatient STARS service as well as in primary care. She is a national lecturer and educator on opioid prescribing and developed the website, www.opioidresources.org, a resource for opioid prescribing in the primary care setting.

She is PI of PittCATS, a NIDA-funded internal mentored K award program for promising junior faculty in addiction research at the University of Pittsburgh. She directs the Seminar On Addiction Research (SOAR) for post-docs and junior faculty. While at Boston University, she was PI or co-I of over 16 funded training grants from HRSA, AHRQ, American Cancer Society, and NIH (NIDA).
