Academic Interests

My main research interests include scientific inference in epidemiology and clinical research; diagnostic error and diagnostic excellence; clinical reasoning; evidence and evidence-based medicine; and Alzheimer’s biomarkers. I study these topics primarily using philosophy and bioethics, drawing on my training in philosophy of medicine, history and philosophy of science, clinical medicine, and medical education research. Pedagogically, I teach graduate courses in support of the university’s PhD in History and Philosophy of Science and its MA in Bioethics as well as undergraduate courses in support of its Certificate in Conceptual Foundations of Medicine. I am also interested in the role of philosophy of medicine and the health humanities as well as the sciences of reasoning in medical education. Lastly, I direct the university’s Research Ethics Consultation Service.
