Academic Interests

Joshua E Levenson, MD, joined the Heart and Vascular Institute in 2017. He is based primarily at UPMC Shadyside and sees patients with all aspects of cardiovascular disease. He also sees inpatients at UPMC Presbyterian and outpatients at UPMC West Mifflin. He has a clinical focus in cardio-oncology and multimodality cardiac imaging. His imaging expertise is in nuclear cardiology, advanced echocardiography and cardiovascular computed tomography (CT). He is a member of the UPMC Valve Team, Center for Cardiac Amyoidolosis, and he directs the UPMC Center for Cardio-Oncology. He is the only Board Certified Cardio-Oncologist in the School of Medicine, one of ~100 in the world.

In addition to his interests in Cardio-Oncology and Cardiac Imaging, Dr Levenson focuses his non-clinical time on local quality and patient safety improvement within the Heart & Vascular Institute and the UPMC Health System. He has served as physician champion for the Venous Thromboembolism System-Wide Improvement campaign and led multiple projects designed to improve CPR status preference discussions between patients and providers. He also in actively involved in clinical informatics & electronic health record improvements, particularly involve physician hand-off and communication tools.

Dr. Levenson is actively involved in medical student and post-graduate education at UPMC. As Associate Director of Cardiology Fellowship Program, Dr. Levenson leads educational initiatives focused on quality and safety within the training program. He regularly facilitates resident morning report at UPMC Shadyside, hosts the monthly Cardiology Fellowship Morbidity and Mortality Conference, the monthly Cardiology Fellowship Journal Club, and the weekly HVI System-Wide Collaborative Care Teleconference. He has led small group workshops for the Sophomore Cardiology Course, Body Fluid Homeostasis Integrated Workshops Course, and the Advanced Physical Exam (APE) Course. He lectures regularly on the Pre-Clerskhip week. Dr. Levenson also regularly engages in resident education on UPMC Shadyside cardiology consultation rotation.
