Academic Interests

Dr. Shipman studies how the urinary excretion of albumin and other proteins reflects the health of the kidney proximal tubule (PT) and glomerulus. Proteinuria results when the PT cannot fully reclaim proteins that escape the glomerular filtration barrier, and it is strongly associated with the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Using quantitative imaging in normal and proteinuric mouse models, she aims to builds multiscale mathematical models of PT endocytic capacity that account for sex differences, luminal fluid flow, and protein filtration—both within individual cells and along the length of the tubule. Her long-term goal is to determine how sex, kidney size, and nephron number together shape susceptibility to injury and the trajectory of CKD progression.
