Academic Interests

My research uses mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative) to design and study implementation and effectiveness of novel lifestyle interventions on patient-centered outcomes (e.g., physical functioning, quality of life) and chronic kidney disease trajectories (i.e., rate of kidney function decline, incidence of end-stage kidney disease). I also study the impact of weight on kidney disease progression and kidney transplant outcomes (e.g., waitlisting and transplantation).

My goal is to develop, implement, and disseminate innovative models for CKD management which integrate lifestyle interventions to promote patient engagement and prioritize independence and quality-of-life. Specifically, I envision developing a CKD care model that is rooted in core principles from my multiple medical specialties, such as family-centered communication and community health partnership central to pediatric care; lifestyle and behavior change interventions integral to obesity treatment; and novel therapeutics which bridge obesity and kidney medicine.

I am a combined internal medicine and pediatric residency trained physician with dual fellowship training in obesity medicine and nephrology. I am triple board certified in internal medicine, nephrology and obesity medicine. I diagnose, treat and manage all aspects of acute and chronic kidney conditions. I have a special interest in helping young adults with kidney disease smoothly transition from pediatric to adult kidney specialists. I integrate nutrition, lifestyle and behavioral interventions in all aspects my medical practice. For those living with overweight or obesity, I offer my unique multidisciplinary expertise to prevent and treat cardio-kidney-metabolic disease through tailored therapy and a team-based approach to help each person attain their health goals.

I have an undergraduate degree in Nutrition Basic Sciences from Penn State University, over 15 years of combined volunteer and professional experience as a community health educator and adult and pediatric physician employing behavior modification strategies to educate, model, train and motivate positive lifestyle changes in diverse populations. Using my extensive background and experience, my goal is to train students, medical trainees, colleagues, and patients about the impact of food, weight management and lifestyle on health and disease management, especially as it pertains to kidney disease.
