  • Associate Professor of Medicine
Academic Interests

Clinical cardiology and cardiovascular epidemiology. In particular, risk assessment for cardiovascular disease in asymptomatic individuals as well as in patients with suspected or known CAD.

Reseach focus on understanding the development and progression of atherosclerosis from a clinical and epidemiological perspective. This information is also used to refine diagnosis and risk assessment of atherosclerosis and coronary artery disease. Research interests expand on the impact of those findings on the management of atherosclerosis, chronic coronary artery disease and cardiovascular risk reduction. While most of the research is related to the role of cardiovascular imaging, particularly cardiovascular computed tomography, interest expands to other clinical and laboratory biomarkers of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular risk.

Interest in clinical cardiology with particular focus of cardiovascular prevention and risk assessment of asymptomatic individuals and cardiovascular prevention. In addition to that, interested in chronic coronary syndromes / stable angina patients including those with advanced coronary artery disease and refractory angina.

Additionally, interests include the use of cardiovascular imaging, particularly cardiac computed tomography to diagnose, risk stratify and plan management of coronary artery disease.

Other interests include the impact of upstream environmental, social and cultural on the development, progression, risk and management of cardiovascular diseases.

Involved in the teaching of clinical cardiology to medical students, residents, and fellows.
Also directly involved in the teaching of cardiac MRI and cardiac computed tomography to radiology residents, cardiology fellows, advanced cardiovascular imaging fellows and advanced cardiothoracic fellows.
Dr. Bittencourt is the associate director of the advanced cardiovascular imaging fellowship at UPMC.
