Dr. Roy is an Internal Medicine- and Addiction Medicine-trained physician and health services researcher. Her research interests are centered on low-barrier access to addiction treatment and trainee education in addiction. Her current focus is a collaboration with the Allegheny County Health Department to develop a Bridge Clinic. She has published commentaries in high-impact journals on improving access to medication treatment for substance use disorders. She has also focused on research prioritizing receipt of addiction treatment in-hospital and post-discharge, including health services work looking at wait-times for treatment and their impact on linkage. Dr. Roy also has expertise on chronic opioid prescribing, from faculty education to studying algorithms that address opioid misuse. Overall, her expertise centers on health services research that seeks to understand and address the barriers patients and providers face regarding buprenorphine and methadone treatment access within the context of current clinical care.
Dr. Roy directs the Inpatient Substance Treatment & Recovery Service at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, sees patients at the Internal Medicine Recovery and Engagement Program (IM-REP), and serves as core faculty for the UPMC Addiction Medicine Fellowship. She is board certified in internal medicine and addiction medicine. She has lectured on addition treatment as well as provides curricular development for STARS. She is a teaching attending on the inpatient general medical services and works with residents and fellows on STARS. She also runs the Addiction Medicine/Addiction Psychiatry Journal Club series.
